In the manga, he is Professor Oak's grandson. Gary is also Professor Oak's grandson in the manga, but in a different series. Fact check: No he is not. Even in the manga, Blue is Professor Oak's grandson. And in the games, while you can put any random name for you are your rival, the character you play is named Red, and your rival, who is also introduced as Professor Oak's grandson and the character's childhood friend, is named Blue. This is Pokemon canon
