MartialReader: The ribonucleic acid, or RNA, is named after the five-carbon sugar group that make up its backbone-ribose. Just like the DNA, RNA has a sugar-phosphate RNA is single-stranded and does not have thymine. Instead, it has adenine pairs with the nitrogen base uracil. RNA may also be found in the nucleus and cytoplasm of the cell. The three kinds of RNA are the messanger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and transfer RNA(tRNA). All three, together with DNA, work to build the proteins the proteins needed by the body.
Type: Messenger RNA (mRNA)
Characteristic: Formed in the nucleoplasm with DNA as template; has groups of three bases called codons.
Function: Brings the code for synthesis of proteins from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
Type: Transfsr RNA (tRNA)
Characteristic: Clover shaped structure with three exposed bases called anticodons on one end and an amino acid on the other found in cytoplasm.
Function: Picks up amino acids in the cytoplasm and fits the into the proper place in the growing chain of polypeptide inside a ribosome.
Type: Ribosomal RNA(rRNA)
Characteristic: made in the nucleolus (dark areas of the nucleus)
