barkbarkbar: Technically speaking, Shakespearean (Queen Elizabeth I) English is actually be considered as modern English! 😱 (it uses the current alphabet for the most part)
Then there's middle English which has similarities to modern, but with vastly different spellings and pronunciation (this is where we get all of our dumb silent letters from...like in Daughter, Knife, thought, tough...etc)
Then (and here's where s**t goes sideways) there's Ye Olde English! 😄 It uses a COMPLETELY different lettering system (think viking Runes instead of the Alphabet) and is the base of many modern words (the word English is based off of a variation of the word "Anglo" from the Anglo-Saxon groups which spoke the language in areas of England and Scotland). And was used starting around 400ish C.E. It's also sometimes called Anglo-Saxon instead of "old english" because of this.

I'm guessing that what author-san is referring to is Anglo-Saxon (Old English) because it has a very distinct appearance (like imagine an entire alphabet made up entirely of funky looking "T's and X's")

**I'm not a complete expert on the topic just a total nerd about language etymology stuffs and like to share wierd history knowledge ^-^**
