Olpi slid Elero's jacket up by a few inches, then put a hand over her mouth. 'I knew it. It's a miracle she was even conscious, let alone fighting wolves. How does she have this much pain tolerance?' By rolling the jacket up further, she got her answer.

A vein bulged in the man's forehead: "If not for monsters like that wolf we wouldn't have been taken in the first place. Ever since a week ago, when the world trembled and the moon broke, creatures of their ilk have assaulted the town. We've been attacked before but never like this, especially in the winter time. It's not natural. My wife would come home exhausted and covered in wounds. The nobles wouldn't help us either. When the bandits offered us their protection, we had no choice. Now we pay the price."

'I'm not naïve,' Thomas thought. 'I'll show them.' He plunged his hand into the snow, numb to its chilled touch, and raised it to his nose. He counted six scents, six transparent ribbons of different "colors" that continued off the path. One of the scents was of a different variety, stranger. It was neither human nor was it an animal but something in between. An inexplicable sense of familiarity caused him to question himself for a brief moment. He took a moment to search for any gaps in his memory, but came up with nothing. 'Doevm's been watching me. He would have said something if "I" had done this. I've had control. Still, maybe I can catch one of those bandits for a quick bite.'

I don't know what your lives will be like in the future but my door, which will always be open for the both of you, is not it. Look around. Go somewhere. Do something. Make friends. Make enemies. Come back on occasion and tell me the stories you've lived. There are both beautiful and terrifying things in this imperfect world. What's important is to know what the world is like. You both live in it, and therefore you must live with its imperfections. However, with these gifts I've scattered throughout the world, may you both change the parts you don't like for the better. You don't need a prophecy to be a hero. Congratulation for your graduation.
