This is it exactly! I couldn’t have explained it better myself, thank you so much for taking the time to write this!

The migraine that was pounding on his temples with a vengeance was probably the side effect of the memories of the other lives he'd led. They had come back with too much alacrity, rushing into his brain in a torrential flood and vying with each other for space and importance. Much like how Yan Yun's life experiences had entered his mind without warning when he'd first transmigrated, he now had an even clearer picture knowing that once upon a time, a part of him had been Yan Yun, had experienced all the ups and downs of the Yan Family's fall from grace, had gone through the turmoil of spending his formative years as a slave in the Wu Household. That part of him had returned now.

It's based on a different Taoist concept that I have also taken some liberties with, as explained in the footnote. I hope that helps!

They're not reincarnations, they're three souls belonging to the same person that were split in the reincarnation wheel, and entering different locations and bodies at different but not entire mutually exclusive times.

Many layers of crazy here! 🥲 thanks so much for reading!

Compared to that failure of a woman who had held the position of crown princess for so long but didn't manage to bring him anything but doubt and ridicule, she was a far better choice to present to the morning court indeed. Given that the Wu Family had been executed so swiftly, she had no more family backing to support her, no one to help her attempt to manipulate him.

Ziyu is actually his courtesy name! I think I mentioned it briefly in one these recent chapters but it wasn't made clear enough sorry! His birth name is Yun Zheyan, the inversion of Yan Zheyun, but this is complicated and I definitely need to make it more obvious when I edit. Thank you so much for commenting and highlighting the issue to me! <3

"Yun Zheyan, don't say I didn't warn you," the visitor bit out. "You act so high and mighty but how different are you to me? Both our families are small and need to rely on this naive idealistic crown prince for a living. I chose to hedge my bets on more than one master but what else can I do? Not all of us are pretty enough to spread our legs and gain some favour."

What happens in my kitchen every evening except there's no 'surprisingly tasty' aspect of it XD Thank you very much for reading! <3

Little Brother Fan jabbed a thumb unceremoniously towards the old woman who glared at him before turning her head away with a snooty harrumph. "Those memories get wiped clean by this woman's dark cuisine (5)."

"And so, when Yan Yun is no longer angry with this sovereign anymore, know that this painting will be waiting to be appreciated by you in Tianlu Pavilion."

Back in the past, they used to cover the name portion with a piece of parchment attached with rice glue (or at least they did in some dynasties...). Examiners weren't supposed to remove the parchment until all the papers were graded but unfortunately, I'm sure some people thought themselves above those rules and found ways and means to get around it... (':

Initially, Liu Yao had considered letting her take on a position within the morning court in the Ministry of Rites, dealing solely with female education. This had made practical sense. It wasn't unusual for the emperor to grant a post to a favoured individual. But Yan Zheyun had advocated on her behalf. He knew that in the past, there were female officials too but all of them, having never set the imperial examinations before, could not be regarded as equal to their male counterparts. Their political role was thus confined to the ambit of the inner palace, where they overlapped with the eunuchs' domain by recording the emperor's sex life to ascertain and ensure the purity of the imperial line.
